This website is being constructed to
complement the forthcoming edition of Who Owns Scotland (Canongate
Books, 1996) which will be a completely revised, expanded
and rewritten account of landownership in Scotland.
Researching and writing such books is
a time-consuming business and makes very little
money for anyone - author
or publisher.
Developing this website will enable all the research to be of much greater
use to a vastly greater
number of people by making available details which could never find their
way into a printed book and by making the information accessible to people
all over the world via the Internet.
We (Andy Wightman and the Caledonia Centre for Social Development)
have decided to collaborate in this project and are undertaking
the work on
a not-for-profit basis. No-one will be making any commercial gain from
this work although those involved in its development are not (at least
beyond the initial stages) planning to do this work on an unpaid basis.
We have homes to heat and families to feed. This is not a commercial undertaking
but it is being carried out professionally.
So How Can You Help?
£££££££
Undertaking the research and constructing the website is an ambitious task
which will require around 2-3 years to complete. This we obviously need
financial support.
In the first instance therefore we are currently appealing
for funds to enable the project to happen. Those willing to
make a donation will be
credited as follows: -
INDIVIDUALS &
NOT-FOR-PROFITS:
Supporter
£10 - £99
Founder
£100 - £499
Benefactor
£500 and over
CORPORATE
BODIES:
Corporate Sponsor
£1000 minimum
All supporters will
receive regular progress reports.
Please use our secure online donation facility or
you can mail a cheque. Cheques should be made payable to Caledonia Centre
for Social Development and sent to the address at the top of this page.
If you qualify to make a Gift Aid declaration (which adds 28p in the £ to
the value of your donation), please complete a Gift
Aid form available here.
Direct financial assistance is vital. But so too is publicity. You can
help by publicising the existence of the site to people or organisations
you think might be interested in its use and to those you think might be
willing to provide financial support.
We are keen to develop academic and public & private
sector collaborations. In future we have plans to make
available historic landownership information
and other forms of data which will enrich the existing information.
Please feel free to contact us. We would welcome your comments, suggestions
and input.
